Mahabodhi Temple at Bodhgaya
The Mahabodhi Temple at Bodhgaya

The 24th Great Kagyu Mönlam was once again hosted by His holiness The Karmapa, who gave teachings under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya every day for the thousands of monks and other pilgrims that had travelled from afar. However, for the first step of our pilgrimage, Lama Gawang Rinpoche, taking the group of Sangha members under his wing, shepherded us through the colourful Tibetan Refugee Camp in Delhi before bringing us to visit H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche, where we were blessed to have a very memorable private audience, and also briefly meet Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche.

In Bodhgaya at the new Tergar Monastery, where H.H. the Gyalwa Karmapa gave a series of teachings for foreigners, we were also priveleged to be able to pay a visit to Jamgon Kontrul Rinpoche, and paid our respects to a number of the many Buddhist temples from different countries, that are situated there. Those nine wondrous days flew by too quickly, but Rinpoche had some additional inspiring treats in store for us and brought us to the Vulture Peak, where the Buddha gave the Prajnaparamita teachings, amongst which the Heart Sutra. On the way up, we visited caves where some renowned Yogis had spent long periods of time meditating.

Nalanda site
A small part of the remains of Nalanda

The archeological site, where the remains of the famous Nalanda University are still to be seen and whose atmosphere continues to instill a sense of awe, was our next port of call.

The Dhamekha Stupa
The Dhamekha Stupa at Sarnath

We also visited Sarnath, the deerpark where Sakyamuni Buddha first turned the wheel of Dharma, teaching the four Noble Truths to the five disciples.
It was thanks to Rinpoche's tireless, entertaining and humorous historical accounts and stories, full of Buddhist lore and wisdom, that these places were steeped with a deeper meaning for us all. It was a very special journey, and one that we will always remember with joy and gratitude.

De geluksknoop, het symbool van een lang leven en eeuwigdurende liefde.
